Master your foundation, product selection, tips & techniques to create a flawless base.

Foundation is the key to creating beautiful makeup. Here I will try and share what I do for my every day makeup, also sharing some tips on product selection and application techniques. I have filmed a follow on video on how to contour and highlight. I'm tying to find people I can used for deeper skin tones to my own and mature skin types, so please stay tuned for that.

Questions I like to ask my clients to make my product choices, that will help you decide:

1. Whats skin type are you- dry / normal / combination or oily.
2. What coverage do you to achieve- sheer / medium / full.
3. What undertone skin do you have- Yellow (cool) or Pink (warm).
4. What finish do you prefer- Glowing / satin / matte.

How to apply glitter, best products & techniques.

There is no other makeup product like glitter to add some seasonal sparkle, but unless you want to look like a fairy its worth making sure your glitters looked into place.

Products for adhering loose glitter-

  • Illamasqua sealing gel- ether use a small layer of the gel over your eye makeup, then press glitter over the top. (I would highly recommend pressing on with fingers rather then a brush, as its extremely hard to get glitter out of brushes!) Or mix glitter with gel and press on top.
  • MAC eyeliner mixing medium- Use in the same way as the Illamasqua sealing gel.
  • DUO lash glue- press a very small amount or glue over eye lid using your fingers, then press glitter on top. The only problem with using duo lash glue is after a few hours it can feel sticky and uncomfortable. Also be careful not to get glue in your eye lashes or eyes.

For loose glitter don't be tempted to go for regular craft glitter as it can be made from sharp material that could scratch your eyes. Cosmetic glitter is made of special plastic that is non-toxic. It’s colored with pigment rather than dye, so that the color doesn’t leach out and stain. Cosmetic glitter is much finer than craft glitter, and the individual particles are usually rounded rather than gagged, instead go for specially designed glitter-

  • MAC glitter (The reflects version is my favorite for beauty looks as its fine, but the chunky version is better for fashion photography as it will show up better).

  • NYX Loose glitter powder (budget option, though I do prefer MAC reflects).

Tip: Always keep tape near when working with glitter as its the easiest way to pick up any drop down on the face, just rap the tape around two fingers and gently press on skin.

A nice way of applying glitter is using glitter liners, which are like the loose glitter but premixed with gel, this wont work as well for fashion makeup on a large area, but good for easy personal use or for on TV to makeup sure you don't get as much fall down.

  • Urban Decay's Heavy Metal Eyeliner- (good painted on after all eye shadow and liner is applied.)
  • Collection Glam Crystals Gel Eyeliner- (budget alternative, a brilliant makeup artist I've worked with at 'The One Show' recommended this product.)

MAC makeup product review powder highlighter

image

I purchased this MAC limited edition highlighter when replenishing my kit. Its called Perfect Topping, Its a powder with frost metallic finish. Smoothes on adding buffed-up highlights to cheeks & eyes, ultra-deluxe polish to the face
Here's a swatch, I tried it on myself then a few of my clients and I love it, give a beautiful sheen.

The MAC artist recommend using it wet , if you do this I suggest to carefully scrape a bit out then mix it with MAC fix + for a creamy wet highlight.

You can order it from MAC Cosmetics

MAC pro conceal and correct palette makeup review & swatches

image

MAC pro conceal and correct palette product review

I use the MAC studio finish concealers for areas that need more full coverage like spots, darkness around the eyes and tattoo coverage. Its good to apply a small amount either with a synthetic brush or fingers, then set with powder.
I've just purchased it in a Pro palette of 4 shades -NC15, W10, NC20, NW20 & 2 colour Correctors in Pale Yellow & Pale Pink. These are a slightly different formula to the studio finish concealers, slightly creamer. Also a friend pointed out on instagram that this formula doesn't have the SPF 35 which is better for photographic purposes, as the SPF is what tends to make the product flash back lighter. It costs £35.
The swatches were done on my skin tone, I'm light, about NC15/NC20 in MAC. The palettes come in light, med, med deep & dark.

Great Gatsby Fashion, makeup and interior inspiration.

I'm a huge fan of director Baz Luhrmann, with his previous films being Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia! He always seem to combine an incredible combination of stunning visuals, music and fashion, so I knew I was in for a bit of a treat when I heard his new film was The Great Gatsby.  I love 1920s makeup, art deco design and fashion, my only wish is that I was part of the makeup team for the film!

I was watching the extras on the DVD and they spoke about some of the exciting collaborations they had to capture the decadence of the roaring 20s. Miuccia Prada was one of the masterminds behind the costumes, along with Miu Miu. They also worked with Tiffanys for the jewellery, creating some of the pieces from their original archives.

The makeup credits go to MAC and the film’s makeup designer Maurizio Silvi.

Here's what Silvi had to say on the makeup:

“Baz Luhrmann approaches directing his films like a painter, giving strong priority to the looks of each character. In his mind, makeup is one of the key elements used to depict love, struggle, pain and romance”

“When we started preparing for the film, my department and I had to choose which products to use for the two main parties: What we referred to as the Glam party and the Sad and Tawdry party.” In creating The Great Gatsby‘s cinematic look, Silvi employed these four key elements:

1. Foundation

“We based each character’s makeup looks around their costume and hair colour. For lighter skin shades we used Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 in shades such as NW15 and NC20. For darker skin shades we used Matchmaster SPF 15 in shades such as 8 and 9.”

Here is a list of the products I used on a fashion shoot for 'Photography magazine'. Even though you wouldn't want to cover yourself in oil and water for a every day look, the water resistant products used are still great for long wearing or holiday makeup.

Charity event at Nicola Smyth – Award Winning Hairdressers Leamington spa. My makeup.

Nicola Smyth Hairdressers in Leamington spa organised a charity event to raise money for Myton Hospice and to celebrate their 1 year Birthday.

I did the makeup, whilst they did the hair on the models for the Catwalk show. A makeup appointment with me was raffled off in their auction.

It was a fantastic event, they raised £600. I have had the pleasure of working with Nicola Smyth hairdressers a few times, whether its been weddings or fashion, I'm always impressed with their stunning hair styling, cutting and colouring. I have my hair done with them, and would highly recommend them.
